A teacher lost nearly $9,000 after scammers allegedly posed as Wells Fargo’s fraud department and convinced her to move money while pretending to protect her account.
Jayme Eubanks says the ordeal began when she received a text message asking whether she recognized a charge on her bank account, reports WBRC News.
She says she did not recognize the transaction and responded that she had not authorized it.
The following day, Eubanks received a phone call from someone claiming to work for Wells Fargo’s fraud department. The caller allegedly told her that her account had been compromised, that she needed a replacement debit card, and that the bank would send one to her.
She says the scam appeared legitimate when a Wells Fargo debit card appeared in her Apple Wallet.
“An actual Wells Fargo debit card, which was confirmed by the bank, appeared in my Apple Wallet without any personal information. No Social Security number, no debit card number, no account number.”
Believing she was working with the bank to secure her funds, Eubanks says she transferred nearly $9,000 into a new account as instructed by the caller.
She later discovered that the replacement debit card associated with the transaction actually belonged to another Wells Fargo customer.
Eubanks reported the incident to Trussville police and contacted the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the state attorney general’s office.
She said Wells Fargo ultimately denied her fraud claim and told her the case had been closed.
Wells Fargo says it sympathizes with customers affected by financial scams and has taken steps to educate customers and combat fraud.
Eubanks says she hopes sharing her experience will help others recognize similar schemes, particularly when an unexpected phone call follows a seemingly legitimate fraud alert.
“The biggest reason is how to help other people. I don’t think anything is wrong with responding to a text message, but if you get a phone call, that just is a red flag.”
