TikTok is agreeing to pay $400 million to resolve allegations that it violated children’s online privacy laws under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
The agreement resolves claims that TikTok, ByteDance, and affiliated companies unlawfully collected children’s data and improperly allowed account creation, says the Justice Department.
TikTok will pay $300 million immediately and another $100 million once a prior 2019 consent decree entered against TikTok’s predecessor, Musical.ly, is vacated.
The deal marks one of the largest recoveries ever obtained in a COPPA case and includes no admission of liability.
Associate Attorney General Stanley E. Woodward Jr. addressed the resolution.
“This settlement is a major victory for American children and parents. The Department’s priority is ensuring that children are protected online and that companies entrusted with their personal information meet their legal obligations. This resolution secures a substantial recovery while reinforcing the protections that families expect and deserve.”
Since the suit was filed in 2024, TikTok has implemented stronger safeguards for younger users, improved age controls, and enhanced parental oversight.
Assistant Attorney General Brett A. Shumate emphasized the outcome.
“Companies that collect children’s personal information must comply with the law. This resolution secures a significant monetary recovery and reflects the Department’s commitment to ensuring children receive the full protections that Congress mandated.”
