Federal prosecutors are charging two people in California and one in Florida with paying Skid Row residents to forge ballot petition signatures using stolen voter identities.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California says James Brass, 47, also known as “Lord,” of Victorville was arrested with Courtney Price, 49, of Jacksonville, Florida, and Jateisha Herron, 33, of Boron, California.
Brass allegedly received about $41,600 from coordinators working with a petition management company.
All three face conspiracy charges while Brass and Price face an additional identity fraud count.
Prosecutors say Brass and Herron signed false declarations claiming they witnessed the signatures.
Says First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli,
“These defendants are charged with using stolen identities of registered voters to manufacture signatures on ballot petitions used to shape California law.
They allegedly used people, including members of Skid Row’s vulnerable homeless population, to try to cover up their tracks. The charged conduct undermines the confidence voters have in our election systems, and we will vigorously investigate and charge anyone involved.”
FBI Assistant Director Patrick Grandy says the scheme sought to undermine an essential pillar of democracy.
“It is imperative that Americans have confidence in our voting system and election infrastructure.
The scheme outlined in today’s indictment sought to undermine an essential pillar of our democracy and cause an undue burden on taxpayers. We will remain vigilant in detecting those trying to weaken our political process and we will aggressively investigate any allegations of voter fraud or other election crimes.”
If convicted each count carries a maximum of five years in federal prison.
