Scammers Drain $35,000 From Pennsylvania Man After Posing as FTC Officials

A Pennsylvania man lost $35,000 after scammers allegedly impersonated federal officials, gained remote access to his computer and arranged for couriers to collect his cash.

Lancaster County resident Kevin Eberle was first contacted through a text message claiming he had been charged $340 for a computer protection service, reports WGAL.

The message included a phone number to call if he did not recognize the charge. When Eberle called, the person on the other end allegedly offered to reverse the transaction before claiming that additional fraudulent activity had been discovered.

Eberle was then given another phone number and a case number and was told to contact someone who supposedly headed the Federal Trade Commission.

The second caller allegedly identified himself as FTC Commissioner Mark Meador and told Eberle that his financial accounts were connected to a money laundering investigation.

According to Eberle, the scammers claimed that three properties had been rented under his name in Texas.

The alleged fraudsters then instructed Eberle to install AnyDesk, a legitimate remote-access program that allowed them to view his computer and access information about his bank accounts.

After examining his finances, the scammers allegedly told Eberle that he needed to withdraw his money and move it somewhere safe because his accounts could contain proceeds from fraud.

Eberle was instructed to take $20,000 in cash to a Walmart parking lot and hand it to a courier. The scammers allegedly provided him with an image of a dollar bill and a password that the courier would use to identify the victim.

After receiving the cash, the courier’s alleged associates sent Eberle a photograph of a supposed check representing the money. Eberle later realized the document was fraudulent, noting that it was dated 2020 and appeared to have been generated using artificial intelligence.

The scammers also sent him a letter that purported to come from the FTC and claimed his identity and finances were under investigation.

Eberle was then instructed to withdraw another $15,000 and deliver it to a second courier at a Turkey Hill parking lot.

He followed the instructions, bringing his total loss to $35,000.

    Says Eberle,

“If you’re not sure, question, get a friend. Ask somebody you know. Double check.”
