A Georgia man lost $30,000 after scammers allegedly posed as bank and law enforcement officials and convinced him to hand over his savings for “safekeeping.”
The Roswell resident reported the incident to police on August 11th after the months-long scheme left him out $30,000, reports Appen Media Group.
The fraud allegedly began in July when the man received a call from someone claiming to represent American Express. The caller told him that someone was using a card in his name, then transferred him to people who claimed to be officers with the New York City Police Department.
After speaking with three supposed NYPD officials, the victim was allegedly told that his Bank of America account had been linked to money laundering for a cartel.
The scammers then allegedly connected him with someone posing as an FBI agent. The supposed agent told the man that he would be detained unless he provided information about accounts he held with Fidelity Investments and Wells Fargo.
The victim sent screenshots showing the balances in both accounts, although he concealed the account numbers.
The alleged fraudsters then instructed him to purchase a new cellphone so they could monitor his communications through the encrypted messaging app Signal. The victim reportedly paid $1,200 for the phone and was told he would be reimbursed.
Nearly a month later, the scheme took another turn.
On Aug. 10, the victim logged in to what he believed was his Fidelity account and received a warning that the account had been compromised. He was instructed to call a number for assistance.
The person who answered allegedly claimed to work for “Microsoft Word” and told the victim to withdraw $30,000 from his Wells Fargo account.
He was instructed to place the cash in a brown paper bag and take it to a location on Roswell Road.
The victim followed the instructions and met an alleged courier between 7:30 and 8 p.m. that evening. He handed over the $30,000 in cash to the stranger.
The victim later provided police with a description of the alleged courier, whom he said was approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall, had a slim build and black curly hair.
Roswell police are investigating the reported fraud.
